Lamentation

Christmas tree Christmas carols are usually happy, hopeful songs… but not always. The Coventry Carol dates back to 16th century England where it was part of a mystery play that tells the Christmas story from the second chapter of the Gospel of Matthew. The gospel tells of the Massacre of the Innocents where, after the birth of Christ, King Herod ordered all male infants under the age of two in Bethlehem to be killed. In the play, the carol is a haunting lullaby sung by mothers of the doomed children as a warning for Joseph to take his family and flee to Egypt.

I think it’s important for us to remember the whole of the nativity story and with this in mind, today’s carol is the Coventry Carol, sung here by the CORO Vocal Artists in a stunning arrangement again by Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo.
