Before Thy Throne

John Rutter’s new composition “Give The King Thy Judgements, O God” is a wonderful mix of blasting fanfare and more quiet reflection. It’s rousing, to say the least.

  1. He’s such a talented composer. Is he his own lyricist as well?
The centre section sounded like a hymn we sing in the Anglican Church, I think. Or maybe he is one of those composers who has the music going to the “right place”, so it seems familiar.

    • Rutter usually sets the lyrics of others- this is a setting of Psalm 72: 1-5, 67: 3. It was written in 2015 for the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta but as I’ve dug into it, I think it might be a re-setting of an Orlando Gibbon hymn (and not an entirely new composition).
