Sussex Carol

Christmas Music 2016The Sussex Carol is not nearly as familiar in North America as it is in Britain which is a shame, because it’s lovely.

  1. Oh, it’s quite popular here as well, especially among church choirs. We can both credit that fine agnostic composer and musicologist Ralph Vaughan Williams, who (with Cecil Sharp) first “gathered” and used it in his 1912 “Fantasia on Christmas Carols”. (It was sung to them by a Harriet Verrall of Monk’s Gate, near Horsham, Sussex – hence the name.)
